Under the disguise of creating jobs, Congress has introduced a bill to expand offshore drilling in the Gulf of Mexico.

On Wednesday, February 01, 2012 the Natural Resources Committee will have a full committee markup on the energy portion of the American Energy & Infrastructure Act. This piece of legislation will link new American energy production with high-priority infrastructure projects by removing government barriers to American energy production.

The energy portion of the bill will require the Administration to move forward with new offshore energy production in areas that contain the most oil and natural gas resources – including the Atlantic Coast, Pacific Coast and portions of the Eastern Gulf of Mexico. This bill requires the Secretary of Interior to conduct oil and natural gas lease sales in the Gulf of Mexico and offshore Virginia that have been delayed or canceled.

While everyone appreciates the need of the nation to supply itself with energy, the consequences from a major oil spill will devastate our water, shores, sport and commercial fishing, and of course, Florida’s greatest economic engine, tourism.

Florida’s experience with the BP Deepwater Horizon has proven that a major oil spill would be an economic disaster for Florida. To expand access to offshore drilling sites would be irresponsible and increase the odds of another economic and environmental disaster.
