School Start Date Could Cut Summer Vacation Time

By Carol Dover

House Bill 1243 by Rep. Larry Metz and Senate Bill 1468 by Sen. Bill Montford proposed to allow schools to start the fall semester more than 14 days before Labor Day. In 2006, in a compromise between parents, businesses and educators, legislation was passed that stated schools could not begin classes more than 14 days prior to Labor Day.

This week Carol Dover, President/CEO of FRLA and Richard Turner, General Counsel and VP-Government Relations met with Senator Bill Montford to discuss the bill. Carol and Richard along with FRLA Lobbyists Steve Metz and Andy Palmer met with Rep. Larry Metz to discuss HB 1243 on Tuesday, January 24, 2012.

The FRLA thinks that it is critical to leave the statute as it was amended in 2006 because hoteliers and restaurateurs have reported significant spikes in occupancy and attendance immediately prior to the school year starting. Moving the school start date earlier in the summer would be extremely detrimental to the hospitality industry.

On Friday, January 27, 2012, there is a major meeting among interested parties and lobbyists to discuss legislative strategy.
